Sound familiar? Getting a UTI again and again

Many women experience recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs). The burning sensation when urinating, the constant urge to go — it's not just uncomfortable, it affects your daily life. The good news: there's a lot you can do yourself to reduce the risk.

What causes recurring UTIs?

A UTI is caused by bacteria — usually E. coli — entering the bladder. For some women, this happens repeatedly due to factors like anatomy, hormonal changes (e.g. after menopause), or sexual activity.

What can you do yourself?

  • Stay well hydrated: Drinking at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water a day helps flush bacteria from the bladder.
  • Urinate after sex: This reduces the risk of bacteria entering the urinary tract.
  • Cranberry: Cranberry extract can help prevent bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. Choose a concentrated supplement — not a sugary juice.
  • Good intimate hygiene: Use pH-neutral, mild products and avoid perfumed soap in the intimate area.
  • Cotton underwear: Lets the skin breathe and avoids the moist conditions that promote bacterial growth.

When to see a doctor?

If you experience more than two UTIs per year, or if symptoms don't clear up within a few days, consult your GP. Recurring infections can indicate an underlying cause that needs treatment.
